HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE: Key PE Types You Must Know Before Sourcing Packaging Materials

Why are some polyethylene (PE) materials made into rigid bottles while others become cling film? What separates HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE?
In this guide, we break down these three common PE grades from four dimensions: density, performance, application and cost, covering stretch wrap, plastic bags, pipes and many more packaging products.

All three materials belong to polyethylene family. Their core differences lie in molecular structure and density.
- HDPE: High Density Polyethylene
- LDPE: Low Density Polyethylene
- LLDPE: Linear Low Density Polyethylene

Generally speaking, higher density means tighter molecular arrangement, resulting in stiffer and harder material.

HDPE: Rigid, sturdy and high strength

High-density polyethylene, also known as low-pressure polyethylene. It has a linear molecular structure with few branches and tightly packed molecules.

Key Properties

  • Rigid and dimensionally stable, resistant to deformation
  • High tensile and compressive strength
  • Excellent chemical resistance against acid and alkali
  • Opaque, milky white appearance

Typical Applications

  • Bottles: milk bottles, laundry detergent bottles, shampoo bottles
  • Pipes: water supply pipes, gas pipes (PE80, PE100)
  • Drums & containers: chemical drums, turnover boxes, waste bins
  • Films: shopping bags, garbage bags
  • Others: geomembrane, safety helmets

LDPE: Soft, flexible and transparent

Low-density polyethylene, also called high-pressure polyethylene. Its molecular chain contains many long and short branches, leading to loose molecular arrangement.

Key Properties

  • Soft and easy to deform
  • High transparency
  • Good toughness, hard to break
  • Great heat-sealing performance for convenient sealing

Typical Applications

  • Plastic bags: courier bags, packaging pouches
  • Food cling film
  • Shrink wrap for product outer packaging
  • Agricultural films: greenhouse film, mulch film
  • Coating: paper coating, aluminum foil lamination

LLDPE: High toughness, superior puncture & tear resistance

Linear Low Density Polyethylene. It adopts linear molecular structure with evenly distributed short branches.

Key Properties

  • Outstanding toughness, resistant to tearing and puncturing
  • Higher tensile strength than LDPE
  • Excellent low-temperature performance, remains flexible at -40°C
  • Moderate transparency, lower than LDPE

Typical Applications

  • Stretch wrap / pallet wrapping film
  • Heavy-duty packaging bags: fertilizer bags, cement bags
  • Agricultural mulch film
  • Frozen food packaging film
